Spring: What's Popular in Custom Home Design

As we shake off the last chills of winter and welcome the longer days of spring, we're seeing fresh energy and vision in every corner of the custom home world. At Larsen, we’re lucky to collaborate with clients who push the envelope—and 2025 is already shaping up to be a year defined by bold contrasts, intentional living, and elevated outdoor experiences.

Here’s what we’re loving (and building!) this season:

1. Outdoor Living, Reinvented

Colorado spring comes with its own rhythm—snow one day, patio cocktails the next. Our latest homes blur the line between inside and out with retractable bifold doors, fully integrated outdoor kitchens, heated patios, and resort-style pools that make everyday living feel like vacation. One of our builds includes a custom steel trellis, beautiful pool but Browne and Associates, and firepit lounge that stays usable nearly year-round.

2. Curves Are In

From arched doorways to soft sculptural built-ins, we’re seeing more requests for organic shapes that add warmth and depth to modern architecture. We’re embracing this through curved staircases, custom fireplace surrounds, and rounded plaster niches that add character without clutter.

3. Working Kitchens That Work

High-performance kitchens aren’t just beautiful—they’re multitasking powerhouses. In our most recent designs, clients are asking for full working kitchens tucked behind the show kitchen, complete with dedicated coffee bars, pantry access, and scullery sinks. Function and flow are everything.

4. The Return of Limewash

The soft, chalky texture of limewash is having a major moment—and we are here for it. Whether it’s in a moody office, a serene master bedroom, or layered over built-ins for depth, limewash brings movement and life to walls in a way flat paint just can’t. We’ve been pairing it with natural woods, custom light fixtures, and warm stone for a lived-in luxury that feels effortlessly elevated.

5. Elevated Exterior Finishes

Curb appeal isn’t about flash—it’s about refinement. We’re seeing more clients lean into timeless materials with natural texture and depth. Think precast concrete, brushed stucco, blackened steel details, standing seam metal roofs, and weathered wood cladding. These finishes not only patina beautifully over time, but they also anchor a home in its surroundings—something especially important in Colorado’s dramatic landscapes. A strong exterior sets the tone for everything that follows.

Where We’re Headed

Every home we design and build is unique, but they all start with the same goal: to reflect the way our clients truly live. Spring brings possibility—and we’re ready to create more meaningful, personalized homes that hold space for both joy and calm.
